World War II

During World War II, firms such as McCloskey, Tampa Shipbuilding Company (Tasco), and Tampa Marine Company played an important role in U.S. shipbuilding efforts.  Tampa’s shipyards cranked out concrete merchant “Liberty Ships,” destroyer escorts, minesweepers, and cargo vessels while “Wolf Packs” of German U-boats lurked offshore.
