Description: These comedic dime novels follow 50-year-old Irish immigrant Terrance Muldoon and his misadventures: dealing with unhappy borders, pranks, misunderstandings, and other slapstick staples. The comedy at Muldoon’s expense, however, is far from innocent, and draws from stereotypes of the Irish as uneducated, ignorant buffoons. This is best illustrated by the cover image itself, which depicts Muldoon with ape-like features--a common tactic that was used to demonize and dehumanize the Irish in political cartoons. Given this historical context, the hilarious misadventures of a simpleton dealing with a clash of cultures in his newly-adopted country has a darker meaning underlying it: the Irish are foreign, other, and can never really belong in America.
