Description

Kostas Maris is a lyra musician and instrument maker. His repertoire includes an extensive array of Cretan and Karpathian tunes, and he is skilled in the extemporaneous composition of mantinades (verses). Maris’ paternal family is Cretan and his maternal family is from the Dodecanese island of Karpathos. After settling in New York in 1967, he was regarded as one of the best lyra players in the U.S. He performed for local clubs, PanCretan Association events, 1976 Festival of American Folklife, and 1982-1983 Greek Music Tour sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts. He moved to Miami in 1979 and New Port Richey in the 1990s. Maris received a Florida Folk Heritage Award in 2004.
