Dressed for a special event, the women of GAPA include, front row Foto Lerios, Mary Gianneskis Manticos, Catherine Gonatos Bouchlas; second row Sofie Stamas Athas, Despina Smirlis; top row Dikea Nicholas Arfaras, Assimina Velousis, Mrs. Christou. The Greek American Progressive Association (GAPA) was founded in 1923 as a more conservative alternative to AHEPA. Its stated mission was to preserve Greek language and culture, and it was closely associated with the Orthodox Church. However, by the 1930s its membership had declined.
