Title

Kalymnian Society Ladies in church

Subject

Tarpon Springs, Greek community, Kalymnian Society ladies with Father Karaphillis in St. Nicholas

Description

Ladies Kalymnian Society members gathered with Father Theofilos Karaphillis in front of the altar inside the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in 1944. After the initial influx, Kalymnians gradually became the largest regional group within the Greek community. They have maintained an active society that is part of the national Pan-Kalymnian Society network. As in many ethnic communities, immigrants from different islands, regions, or cities banded together to cre#ate organizations that were designed both for fellowship and for mutual support in times of personal or social crisis.
