Children dressed in Greek dance costumes pose with Father Kalariotes, Father Athas, Bishop Aimilianos Laloussis, Florida Secretary of State Richard Stone, and Mayor George C. Tsourakis in front of the Florida Historical Marker dedicated to the Tarpon Springs Sponge Industry on April, 1973. The young man with glasses is Congressman Gus Bilirakis. The marker provides a succinct history of the sponge industry and notes that the “Tarpon Springs Sponge Exchange has continued to serve as a focal point for the Greek community.”
