Title

man outside tourist shop

Subject

Tarpon Springs, Greek community, sponge industry, tourism

Description

A man stands next to the Sea Curiosities from Gulf of Mexico tourist display on January 30, 1928. Note the dinghy named for Greek Prime Minister Venizelos and the shop to the left, which is a ships’ chandlery. Mass tourism bloomed after World War I as the middle class expanded. The influx of Greeks coincided with growing interest in cultural tourism. Since the 1920s and 30s, it has been the biggest attraction for tourists visiting Tarpon Springs.
