Hitler's Aryan Ideal
Oral History Item Type Metadata
My brother and me were children, and the only thing we really knew was that Hitler wanted to get rid of all the Jews. But why he chose the Jews is still to this day really a mystery. But, of course, it wasn't only Jews. He killed Gypsies; he killed physically or mentally handicapped people, even German people. But, you know, it was known at that time that it was his policy that he didn't want Jews in his Reich, in his domain.
What is, of course, amazing was that at first he didn't really want to kill Jews; he just wanted to get rid of them, out of his--out of Germany, and later all the occupied countries. So if other countries would have opened their doors to let people in, Jewish people, they could have been saved. But very few had the privilege to get out. So at first, it wasn't really that he wanted to kill them; he really wanted to get rid of them.
And his theory was that he wanted to build a super race, who had to be tall and blue-eyed and blond, the Germanic race: this was his ideal. But on the other hand, he himself was dark. And me, for instance, I was actually a typical German specimen; I had blue eyes and blonde hair. So, he didn't really go by that.
