I think there hasn’t been enough attention given to the genocide for many years—in fact, since it’s happened—in Cambodia in the educational system. There was virtually no history taught in the schools at all during the Khmer Rouge period, because there were no schools. There were no cities. There were no universities. The educational system had to take precedence in the subsequent period to the recovery from the genocide in other forms of Cambodian life; for instance, the cities had to be resuscitated first, and then the schools were also reestablished from the elementary schools up. The University of Phnom Penh was not reestablished for ten more years, until 1988. And I think it’ll be a long time before the Cambodian educational system recovers to the point where it would have been had the genocide not taken place, largely because so many of the best intellectual minds of Cambodia were murdered by the Khmer Rouge.
